2017 -ESSENTIAL FACTS:
*At the First Jewels meeting in 2007 All Stars had only six starters. This year it has 20******The All Stars record earnings on one day at the Jewels was $583,000 at Ashburton in 2015******All Stars have twice won five Jewels races in 2015 at Ashburton and 2016 at Cambridge******All Stars have won 34 Jewels events.******Phil and Glenys Kennard have now won 10 Jewels events
2017 4 wins worth $449,550- 4 seconds- 2 3rds- 1 4th 1 trifecta-one quinella
FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED FROM THE JEWELS
* Heaven Rocks is an emerging superstar.
Not that we didn't know that. But Natalie's prediction "if he does things right they won't see which way he went" turned out to be an understatement. "He's got so much potential this horse but while he is improving he is still a work in progress andit is one step at a time with him" Read NZ Cup.
Mark on the other hand was disappointed with Waikiki Beach who is just not the horse of old at the moment.
NBHeaven Rocks was the 10th Jewels winner for Phil and Glenys Kennard. A fabulous record
*Ultimate Machete and More the Better were magnificent
Natalie and Mark don't make excuses and wouldn't use any after this race but anybody else would be sure that the defeat of our two best three year olds was as much to do with lack of suitable races thanks to the new handicappingsystem which works against talented three year olds.
"He had his chance" Natalie said of Ultimate Machete who went down late to Jack's Legend. Jack's Legend has had five starts since March 1, Ultimate Machete 3 and More the Better only 2.
Ultimate Machete has now had 16 first three placings in 17 starts and More the Better has been in the first three 19 of 20 starts.
NB. More the Better was allowed to ease in his work with Heaven Rocks on Thursday yet Mark still got his last 800m in 57.5 -as good a sprint as you would get on All Stars track. What did Heaven Rocks do ? More than planned but don't ask.
NBBNote that two generations of Purdons featured in the 3 yo Emerald, Barry training winner Jack's Legend, Mark Ultimate Machete and More the Better -who is co-owned with Roy
*Sometimes second thoughts are best
It was not that many weeks ago when Ashley Locaz was headed out for a spell and had actually left the All Stars stable. Then Mark and Natalie had another assessment of the likely lineup in the two year old Emerald and decided to bring him back. You saw the result of the second thought.
NB Ashley Locaz is a refreshing story of one family's loyalty to one breed. Frank Murfitt, Judy Van Beek's father and Peter Van Beek bred second dam Ashley Cullen and two generations earlier Frank was breeding Ashley Star with Dr Clive Moody. One of her foals, Ashley Knight, was for a considerable time the fastest mile racehorse in New Zealand history clocking 1.52.2 in the US. Blood will out.
*Mark is in his element with trotters
Every year Mark goes to the Jewels with clever plans for his straightout trotters. This year he went down narrowly twice drivingOne Muscle Hill for Nicole Molanderand really testing the budding superstar. He though Muscle Hill was the more unlucky.
"I was getting a nice trip and moved off at the corner for a gap which was there when I moved but wasn't when I got there. So that held us up. But the close finish did reflect that the winner was tiring rather than us making fast ground"
*The Aussies are still a threat
Aussie-trained horses Mr Mojito and One Muscle Hill both ran secondand both did so with asterisks. One Muscle Hill was a shade unlucky on the day and Mr Mojito was a shade unlucky his flight south from Auckland was delayed on Wednesday which meant he had to have a gallop on Thursday to make up for the missed hopple
