What Was Said at Addington Friday as All Stars posts 214th Group One win- 3 WINS IN 4 RACES
Natalie " I wasn't worried about being parked (Ultimate Machete). In fact I was happy to be there. He is so tough and is best rolling along so it suits him. I was really thrilled with him. I could see Jack's Legend was just starting to battle and I was still travelling. A great effort"
Mark "Dream About Me went terrific really. You just can't make any ground when they are going that fast and I was very happy with the way she came home"
Natalie "Thefixer was just so good. I love him for the way he tries so hard. We lost some ground when Waikiki Beach came back but he made it up and won it on his merits. We'll wait and see whether he goes to Auckland or whether we just might freshen him up which we could do"
Mark "Waikiki Beach was disappointing. Not sure what it is but he should have gone better"
Natalie "Ultimate Machete has earned his trip to Perth for those four year old races. Around here he has to clash with Vincent, Dream About Me etc so we will spread them around"
Michelle "We had another bad draw but he got a good run the last round until we really wanted it. Fought on really well."
Mark "Funatthebeach will probably go to the Sires Stakes Silver next. It's a nice race for him "
Kevin Riseley quip "How would you like to race a horse with me ?" -at the moment the best tip you could have in harness racing. Lennytheshark and Lazarus, two genuine superstars: Heaven Rocks, Ultimate Machete. Etc etc. Staggering.
Natalie "Bare Knuckle went super again. Just no luck when we needed it"
Mark. "Major Shard was, well, just him as he can be sometimes. There was nothing else that caused him to race like that. I did think he was going to find it harder stepping up in class anyway"
Glenys Kennard "I am not going into this photo. Been in so many and on the screen so often this week I am going into hiding"
Robert Dunn JOKE OF THE WEEK: Robert said on Tuesday morning he was at the stables when a Pest Control van pulled up. "Looking for pests ?" Robert asked "Yes I am"
"Just go over there to the drivers area and you will see a guy in blue and silver stars. He's what you are looking for !"
1) Natalie is certainly thrilled with Ultimate Machete's win -or has someone just old her a good joke ? 2) A rare happening for All Stars at Addington. A new saddle has to be fitted to Funatthebeach before the last. It made no difference. 3) They are away in the last 4) Bare Knuckle, learning all the time 5) Mark and Trevor have Funatthebeach to look forward to 6)
FIVE WINS-TWO GROUP ONES-OVER $500,000 IN STAKES-ANOTHER MEMORABLE CUP DAY.
*Mark Puts Cup Win on Same Plane as last year's 10 length triumph
*Dream About Me (no part) , Have Faith in Me and Heaven Rocks strike problems in Cup
*Chase Auckland sets new record in Sires Stakes-the 4th successive win in the race for All Stars an amazing stat.
*Several All Stars runners affected by checks and wide runs
WHAT MORE CAN WE SAY ?
Words help a lot of racehorses. Help owners feel better about them. Help trainers to sell them. Help the public to cheer them home. With LAZARUS words seem superflous. They cannot describe adequately how good he is.
You can say his NZ Cup win was arrogant. But we said that last year. You can say that we haven't had a Cup winner like this in decades but we said that last year after he won by 10 len. This year it was only 5.75l. But then last year he wasn't going to Perth for the Inter Dominions. It must have seemed to Mark that a little bit in reserve wasn't a bad thing.
Last year he set a world record. But that wasn't necessary this time. Mark has never been a man to judge his horses by statistics. He judges them by how they perform. And he judges Lazarus the best he has ever trained.
When you think about that it is a hell of a compliment. But are we surprised ?
Its hard to fault Lazarus. Speed and stamina. Manners and temperament. Sounder than a bell and unruffled by almost everything.
Strangely people call Heaven Rocks, because he does things differently, a "freak" pacer.
In reality Lazarus is the freak.
A freak of nature, a freak of performance one of the most docile stallions you would ever find.
It is nearly 20 years since we produced a horse like Lazarus when Christian Cullen, his maternal grandfather, strode the turf.
It will be 20 years before we see a better. That's about the only words we have left to say.
Cup Angles; 1: The two best horse people in NZ happen to be partners 2) Mark and Lazarus. 3) Barry Purdon whose skills were on show with Jack's Legend second in the Cup congratulates Mark -even tho Mark has just surpassed Barry and Roy's record in the Cup 4) The star of the show. 5)Mark is getting to make a lot of speeches these days. 6) Heaven Rocks didn't give himself every chance 7) Anthem gies the "Lazarus" syndicate their first of two wins
FREAK START RUINS IT FOR DREAM ABOUT ME
For Tim Williams, one of the nicest guys in harness racing and a top horseman it was the ultimate disaster.
Dream About Me looked a sharp chance to run a place behind Lazarus in the Cup. But her chances were ruined before she even got started.
With Seel the Deal standing dead in his tracks and then dumping driver Ricky May as he switched inside Dream About Me was completely shut out and out of the richest race in New Zealand.
"I thought I had it covered" said Tim who was the only horse on the second line. "I was placed between the two horses in front in case either one didn't do it right. When Ricky's horse stood I had the room to get down inside him with luck. But he veered in and she just didn't have room to get through."
Natalie thought Heaven Rocks was "just him really"
"He began all right actually then he went a bit funny and got into trouble. I hoped something might make a run and drag us into the race but it didn't happen. You can't give a horse like Lazarus a start like that"
Nathan thought Have Faith In Me was "not disappointing" though not as good as he hoped. Piccadilly Princess trailed Lazarus but could not kick on.
Mark now heads Roy and Barry in number of NZ Cup wins but Barry, that astute and understated trainer, produced the surprise of the race Jack's Legend . He was quick to congratulate Mark and Mark was quick to acknowledge Barry's achievement.
"Jack's Legend went a great race. Gee he has really stepped up " was Mark's assessment.
" I JUST RESPECT WHAT HE HAS DONE SO MUCH "-NATALIE ON CHASE AUCKLAND
"What I really respect about him is how he has taken each step up so well. Because they have been big steps" Natalie said after Chase Auckland gave former Sires Stakes winner Auckland Reactor his first Group One winner at stud.
"He was thrown in the deep end. He had to race against experienced horses who had done a lot of things at two and he hadn't but every question I have asked of him he has answered"
Nathan was thrilled with All U Need is Faith which held fourth while many might have been disappointed with Spankem. Mark said he was giving Spankem the benefit of any doubt.
"Tim went so I had to go and we were out four wide. You just can't make ground from out there at that sort of speed"
Tennyson Bromac ran on well to dead heat for 6th while The Devil's Own was eighth and Think About Me did not get all favours and finished back.,
TIME WAS ON HIS SIDE
Thefixer didn't really look a top liner early in his career and his connections could have been forgiven for believing he might not be as good a prospect as they hoped. But some sage advice from Natalie Rasmussen changed all that. Glenys Kennard remembers what that was.
"Natalie said he is a weak little bugger at the moment but I really think if you give this horse time he will turn out a good one"
Thefixer didn't appear until a spring three year old when he won first up. Then he beat Vincent at last year's Cup meeting which had a few tongues wagging. The he won again at Addington later in the month beating Tiger Thompson.
He didn't appear again until April then he won the Sophomore Classic as part of the Sires Stakes series a $40,000 race. He has only had two starts since the Jewels (4th) when he won again yesterday.
Natalie's judgement was absolutely spot on. Thefixer used to wear a lot of gear now its all open bridle and top race manners. She can take a lot of credit for that. He has only had 10 starts and won five of them and looks to have a big future. But it was that eye to the future which made all the difference.
